Nearly 60 Percent of U.S. Consumers Report Little or No Interested in 3D Scanning Capabilities
San Francisco, September 5, 2019 - New consumer applications enabled by advances in computer vision are not yet mature, found a recent survey from Greenlight Insights, a global market intelligence firm for the virtual and augmented reality industry. Although phone manufacturers, chipmakers, and investors are betting big on the applications of 3D scanning, U.S. consumers surveyed remain apathetic to the inclusion of this feature on a smartphone, with a significant proportion expressing strong disinterest. The survey findings are based on the 2019 Greenlight Insights VR/AR Consumer Study, which was conducted from June to August 2019 among 5,592 respondents in the U.S.
Less than one-fifth (16%) of consumers report being very interested or somewhat interested in creating 3D models of real-world objects on their phones. In contrast, nearly three-fifths (58%) report being very uninterested or somewhat uninterested in 3D mapping.
Greenlight Insights analysts expect a rise in the use of computer vision-driven applications, such as simplified asset generation for virtual and augmented reality, integration with 3D printers, and incorporating 3D scanning into mobile games. Microsoft, Google, Samsung, Huawei, Niantic, and several other companies have already commercialized their computer vision technology.
"The present low interest in 3D scanning in mobile devices underlines the fact that the various use cases for computer vision are not yet well understood, despite the many current consumer and enterprise applications," said Clifton Dawson, CEO & founder at Greenlight Insights.
"In the current era of heightened awareness for user privacy and likeness rights, the existence of such technology on the mass market will inevitably prompt concern and generate friction for user adoption," said JC Kuang, analyst at Greenlight Insights. “The use of cloud storage to save, share, and propagate such models only serves to exacerbate the issue."
Nevertheless, the market positioning of a major technology company like Samsung cannot be easily ignored, especially if computer vision-enabled features prove influential to flagship smartphones in the immediate future. As other OEM competitors continue to implement increasingly sophisticated camera arrays and optical sensors, software-driven 3D scanning would serve as a value add. However, mass adoption from consumers would first need to be primed by extensive support from the overall smartphone ecosystem, including OS providers, app developers, and content creators."
